Will you choose a basic oval or rectangle, or will you venture into L-shapes, kidney shapes, or even Roman and Grecian designs? What sort of shape can your property accommodate? Do you need to make room for other features, like spas, fountains, landscaping, or slides? Swimming Pool Shapes
RECTANGLE. The rectangle is, of course, a very standard pool shape. Simple yet formal, its straight edges and geometric shape make it great for swimming laps.
OVAL. Another classic option, the oval-shaped pool is less formal due to its rounded edges. Most oval-shaped pools are rectangles with rounded edges, as opposed to a more egg-like shape, they’re great for families who love to play.
L-SHAPED. An L-shaped pool embellishes the basic rectangle, essentially combining two rectangles together. This shape is perfect for families who will use the pool both for swimming laps and diving (in the long end) as well as playing (in the smaller section).
LAZY-L. A Lazy-L is very similar to a regular L-shaped pool, except the shorter leg of the L veers off at a diagonal as opposed to 90 degrees. It is a less rigid and formal design, and the shorter leg can make a great beach-style entry.
KIDNEY. A kidney-shaped pool, as you might imagine, resembles the kidney bean in form. With its curvy lines and natural shape, this pool works well in a variety of yards due to its flexibility.
ROMAN & GRECIAN. Roman- and Grecian-shaped pools go back to (you guessed it!) Ancient Rome and Ancient Greece. Although they both have a rectangular base, their stylized corners and unique design elements create very formal and elegant structures. It could be argued that they’re the most regal of all the pool shapes.
FREEFORM. It doesn’t conform to regular or formal shapes, giving it a natural look with a curvilinear form. And if you want your pool to incorporate nature through landscaping, a freeform pool could be the perfect solution because it can be made to definition of your standards.
LAGOON. Lagoon is similar to a freeform design with dramatic curves. This style often allows you to create a back yard paradise, blending in planters and water features around the pools edge.
